International Sports and Leisure History Colloquium

Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th March 2017
Organised by SpLeisH in conjunction with the Department of Exercise and Sports Science
Venue: Manchester Met's Cheshire campus, Crewe, CW1 5DU

Following the outstanding success of similar events in 2015 and 2016, MMU's International Sports and Leisure History research team (SpLeisH) and MMU's Department of Exercise and Sports Science (ESS) are organising a third international gathering of sports and leisure history scholars on the MMU Cheshire campus in March 2017. The organisers are including as wide a range of papers on sport and leisure history as possible and speakers include independent and institutionally affiliated researchers along with postgraduate students. A number of our current European collaborators will be attending and we are keen to see as many overseas delegates join us as possible. Keynote speakers include Professor Jean Williams who will present on 'Britain's Women Olympians from Chattie Cooper to Pat Smythe', Vicki Valosik, who is talking on 'Synchronized Swimming: From Ancient Rome to Vaudeville' and Dr Catherine Hindson, who is exploring'Theatre, Performance and Leisure at Bournville and Somerdale factories'. The Friday night colloquium dinner is preceded by SpLeisH member Professor Dave Day delivering his inaugural professorial lecture, 'Understanding the Victorian Social World through the Lens of Sports History'. The colloquium will not run parallel sessions and researchers will be presenting their work in one of three formats, a 40-minute paper with 10 minutes of questions, a 20-minute paper with 10 minutes of questions, or a 6 minute 20 seconds pecha kucha with 4 minutes of questions.
