We asked some of our students to give us their opinions about their life and study at MMU Cheshire, here is what they had to say...
Caroline came to the Department of Business and Management Studies 2 years ago for a work placement at Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council.
She loved the experience and decided to return as a full-time student and she is studying for the extension degree (3rd year) of BA (Hons) Business Management. She plays volleyball for MMU Cheshire.
"I think it's a really friendly environment at MMU Cheshire, both the students and the staff are very nice and easy to talk to. There is a big difference between England and France, the lecturers here are much more approachable and helpful than in France. I live in the Halls of Residence which are modern and high standard accommodation. I've made friends with my flatmates in halls, with students on the course, and mostly importantly with the volleyball team members, who I see 3 or 4 times a week for training and matches."
Ibrar studied at Xaverian College Manchester before coming to MMU Cheshire and he did A levels in Accounting,
business studies, law and IT.
"I've been doing business studies since high school, I've always liked it. I would like to work in management in a large organisation, I think I'm good at managing people.
I live at home in Manchester, its much better staying in Manchester for the city life. I have taken a student maintenance loan, although I didn't really need it, it helps me with the cost of commuting and I've applied for bursaries, I have budgeted and saved so that I won’t have too much debt. I prefer to travel because my timetable means that I only have to come into university three times a week. I would like to continue to do a masters degree, so I'm saving up for that. I was very nervous when I first came, I was worried I would get on the wrong train because I don't usually travel on trains. It's a new environment and I didn't know anyone. Its been very good because I've met a lot of different people from all over the world, its been a very varied experience. I'm planning to study German as an extra to the course at the university, it will help to enhance my CV. I will do work places as well to help my CV, lots of employers are offering these and I can combine study with the work experience.
The staff here have been really helpful: the library staff and the lecturers, the timetable is flexible, in some subjects you can pick and choose which run of the subject you attend. Coming here has made me more independent, you have to manage your own learning and it's the best way to work."
Hannah is in her 3rd year of the degree,
she came from Barrow Sixth form college,
where she studied A levels. During the first
year, Hannah lived in Halls of Residence,
moved into a house for her second year
and has returned to the halls in Crewe for
her 3rd year.
"Its been good coming back to Halls, I’ve got more work done. It was frightening when I first arrived for the first year because it was the first time I’d left home and I didn’t know anyone, but I soon got talking to my flatmates in Hall. I’m chairwoman of the Hockey Club and I was first team vice captain in the second year. I’d advised anyone who is coming to this small campus university to get involved so that they can get to know other people, you can get to know everyone through the sports clubs.
The combined honours course is a good choice if you are undecided about what you want to do, so I chose a core subject and business which was vocationally oriented which would benefit me career-wise. The combined honours course has given lots of variety as I am studying two completely different subjects.
I have got a job already at BAE Systems on their HR graduate scheme. It's a two-year scheme doing 4 six-month placements throughout the business and at the end of it you can choose where you want to go in the business. I would never have got this job without my degree, it's very exciting and I'm looking forward to it."
Naomi attended South Trafford
College in Manchester studying
hairdressing NVQ level 3, and she
is now in the first year of an HND
Business Management course at
MMU Cheshire.
"When I first arrived, I just wanted to get into it, I took a 2 year gap after leaving college, so I was a bit worried about getting back into studying, but as soon as I got here everything just fell into place. After leaving South Trafford College, I worked in a hairdressers as a stylist, and I decided to come to university to study business as I would like to open my own salon and wanted some knowledge and background about business before starting my own. I looked at a few different universities, and chose MMU Cheshire as the content of the HND seemed more appropriate for someone wanting to start their own business.
I live in Manchester but have left my parents’ home, I’ve had my own flat since I was 18, I didn’t want to give up my flat so I commute to Crewe. My timetable means that I only have to travel to Crewe 3 days a week, so the travelling is fine. I go to MMU student nights in Manchester which are good fun.
In August I am taking advantage of the university’s exchange programme and am going to study for five months at the University of North Carolina. I’ve always wanted to go to America, it will be a wonderful experience, I can experience university life as well as have the opportunity to travel while I’m there. I’ve already chosen my options for the course there which is a business course and accommodation is provided on campus. I can get a part-time job as a stylist at one of the salons in America that my employer in Manchester owns. I’m really excited about going, it’s a marvellous chance to study abroad as part of this course, I’m going a couple of weeks before the course starts so that I can travel first."
Susie completed her A-Levels at Sixth Form in Chester and came to MMU Cheshire to study Drama and Sport Joint Honours (now called Combined Honours). Having finished her degree in June she has now returned to MMU to study a Masters in Exercise and Sport Science: Biomechanics.
"I came to MMU because I couldn’t decide which subject to study further. The joint honours programme allowed me to explore both subjects in equal measure, which I thoroughly enjoyed, especially the variety of material I was learning. By the end of my second year I was sure I wanted to pursue sport science further; having learned new areas of sport science on my degree course, I became particularly interested in Biomechanics. Plenty of information was available about the MSc courses run at MMU Cheshire; I read the programme breakdown and spoke to my undergraduate programme leader as well as the MSc programme leader, both of whom were very helpful in giving me advice. I did well in my degree and was accepted onto the MSc course, which I’m really happy about! The MSc programme is a little bit like Combined Honours; you can chose different units from two different pathways to make up a full degree. I chose to study full biomechanics but swapped one unit for a unit from the physiology pathway. The programme runs for two days a week, which means I’m in lessons all day Thursday and Friday only, this is really good because it gives me lots of time to get assignments done in the week and/or I can work 3 out of 5 week days if I want to. A lot of students on my course are professionals, returning to university part time to improve their knowledge and qualification; they balance 4 days a week in work with one day in Uni. The mixture of people in my class is really good, it makes discussions more interesting and we tend to learn from each other as well as from our lecturers."
"I’ve loved studying at MMU; my undergraduate course allowed me to make some great friends as well as providing me with a good knowledge base to take further to MSc level. I’ve been an active member of a sports club here too; holding social secretary and 1st team captain roles for the hockey club. Being part of a team has opened up so many opportunities for me to make friends, have a really good time and expand on the organisational and people skills I’ve learned. I look forward to the many opportunities the MSc course may bring me."
Being in Crewe we are close to lots of places; Manchester, Newcastle-Under-Lyme, Chester, there’s so many places nearby. It’s quiet here but you can travel to busier places, so you get the best of both worlds.
