What were you doing before attending MMU Cheshire

Studying for A levels at Sussex Downs College in Lewes.

Why did you chose Outdoor Studies at MMU Cheshire

I was already actively involved in the outdoors and was considering a career in the industry. I wanted to study for a degree that I had a genuine interest in and that would help me in my chosen career. I applied to several universities offering similar course, but MMU appealed the most after attending the open day and hearing about the program in more detail.

Experience of Outdoor Studies and MMU Cheshire

The course provided a good balance of theory and practical. Particular highlights for me were the weeks spent in North Wales, Scotland and the Alps. These allowed us to put classroom theory into practice in different environments. The lecturers themselves had an obvious passion for the outdoors, which made for a high level of instruction. I was also lucky enough to be involved in the Erasmus exchange program, spending 3 months at the University of Umea in the North of Sweden. This was an excellent experience and included a cross country ski expedition in Swedish Lapland, digging snow holes to spend the night in.
Whilst studying I also had the opportunity to be involved in the Alternative Curriculum program, working with young people who had been excluded from mainstream education. This gave me practical experience of working with some very challenging young people and has definitely helped towards my development as an instructor. Throughout the 3 years at University I have made some very close friends who share my enthusiasm for adventure and the outdoors.
