You might be interested in all of the above…

We are interested in all of the above and more.

We celebrate innovation, drive and new perspectives on dance. At MMU Cheshire we offer our students a wide range of experiences and perspectives on dance including, not only the historical, contextual and international, but also professional, creative and technical. We help you integrate these experiences in order to develop as independent, versatile and thinking dancers with in-depth skills in analysis and creativity.

There are several studios available for students to create their own work, including large dance studios with sprung floors, and all spaces are open for use from early morning until late evening. One of the dance studios is also a performance space, which is regularly used by visiting professional companies, as well as by students. The Axis Arts Centre, which is based on the campus, has hosted many leading dance companies and choreographers at different stages of their careers, including Mark Morris, Rosemary Butcher, Wayne McGregor and Akram Khan, among others.

The campus library houses the most comprehensive dance collection in the North West, and the archive of dance recordings has over 500 professional works, as well as recordings of all student work. All the Dance tutors have specialist research interests and are active in their different research and practice areas, and they bring this experience and knowledge to their work with students.

The Dance programmes engage in contemporary debates relating to dance research in its widest sense. There are several strands of Dance study which run through our programmes as a whole, and which, depending on your interests, you can focus on in more depth as your studies progress. These strands are, broadly: choreography, performance, research, dance technology and professional studies. Students have many opportunities to work with professional practitioners both on and off campus, since MMU Cheshire has developed strong links with the profession during the 35 years since its establishment at the university. The programme allows you to develop expertise in a range of dance skills relevant to careers in today’s dance profession.

Practical work includes dance technique and supporting studies, such as anatomy and repertoire; improvisation, choreography, both in the studio, as site-specific and on screen; and notation, as a means of documenting, analysing and developing your practical work. Also, and very importantly, students look at some of the different professional contexts of dance – research, administration and management, community outreach, performance, teaching, writing and dance technology.
